St John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort, or Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flowering plant and medicinal herb that is sold over-the-counter. There are approximately 370 species of the genus Hypericum worldwide that are native to the regions of Europe, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Middle East, India, and China. Other names for the herb include Tipton’s weed, rosin rose, goatweed, chase-devil, or Klamath weed.

Here are the 7 health benefits of St. John’s Wort:

  1. John’s worth may be used to treat depression: It has been well known that St. John’s wort can be used as an herbal treatment for depression. A study of 29 clinical trials with more than 5,000 patients was conducted by Cochrane Collaboration. The review concluded that extracts of St John’s wort were better than the placebo in patients with major depression.
  2. John’s Wort may treat Parkinson’s disease: Research from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) suggested that St. John’s wort possesses antioxidants that could help reduce neuronal degeneration caused by Parkinson’s disease.
  3. 5. John’s Wort may have antiviral and antibacterial activities: A randomized controlled study found that St. John’s wort contains chemicals like hyperforin and pseudohyperforin, which contain activities that photooxidizes pathogens and kills them.
  6. John’s Wort may be used for alcoholism: An active chemical in St. John’s wort, hyperforin, may be useful for treatment of alcoholism. However, dosage,  safety, and efficacy have not been investigated yet.
  7. John’s Wort may help with memory:  Studies have shown that St. John’s wort could alleviate long-term age-related impairment in rats.

It is very effective against the oral bacteria linked to inflammatory diseases in the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Spearmint is a perennial plant that hails from Europe and Asia but now commonly grows on five continents around the world. It gets its name from its characteristic spear-shaped leaves.

10 Surprising Health Benefits of Spearmint Tea

  1. Spearmint has been shown to relieve digestive symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, though more research is needed.

  3. Spearmint tea may have beneficial effects on hormones in women, including decreasing male hormones like testosterone and increasing hormones necessary for ovulation.
  4. Two cups of spearmint tea a day may help reduce facial hair growth in women. Studies have shown it may help lower testosterone, which is linked to the growth of facial hair.
  5. Some studies have shown a benefit of spearmint extract on memory in older adults, but more research is needed.
  6. Spearmint has antibacterial activity against several types of harmful bacteria, including bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses, such as E. coli and Listeria.

  10. While evidence on the effects of spearmint on blood pressure is limited, studies have shown that it works similarly to common blood pressure medications.

Cardamom Pods

Cardamom is a spice with an intense, slightly sweet flavor that some people compare to mint. It originated in India but is available worldwide today and used in both sweet and savory recipes. The seeds, oils and extracts of cardamom are thought to have impressive medicinal properties and have been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

10 Health Benefits of Cardamom, Backed by Science

  1. Cardamom may help lower blood pressure, most likely due to its antioxidant and diuretic properties.
  2. Certain compounds in cardamom may fight cancer and stop the growth of tumors in mice and test tubes. Human research is needed to validate if these results apply to humans as well.
  3. The antioxidant compounds in cardamom may help protect cells from damage and slow down and prevent inflammation in your body.
  4. Cardamom may protect against digestive issues and has been shown to reduce the number and size of stomach ulcers in rats.
  5. Cardamom is often used to treat bad breath and is a component of some chewing gums. This is because cardamom might be able to kill common mouth bacteria and prevent cavities.
  6. The essential oils and extracts of cardamom may be effective against a variety of bacterial strains that contribute to fungal infections, food poisoning and stomach issues. However, research has only been conducted in test tubes and not in humans.
  7. Cardamom may improve breathing by stimulating better oxygen uptake and relaxing air passage to the lungs in humans and animals.
  8. A study on rats suggests that cardamom may help decrease high blood sugar levels, but more high-quality human studies are needed.
  9. A limited number of studies suggest that cardamom supplements may decrease waist circumference and prevent anxious behaviors and fatty liver. The reasons behind these effects are unclear but may have to do with the spice’s high antioxidant content.
  10. Using cardamom in cooking is safe for most people. Cardamom supplements and extracts have not been thoroughly researched and should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Fenugreek Seed

There are many plants not native to the western world that, if used properly, can greatly enhance our diets. For centuries, fenugreek has been used by people in other parts of the world, and regrettably, they have only been recently introduced to the West. Plants like fenugreek are not only nutritious but can provide us with numerous health benefits. Read more to learn about how fenugreek can help improve your health.

15 Benefits of Fenugreek (Seeds, Leaves, Tea)

  1. Fenugreek May Improve Brain Function. Fenugreek can lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
  2. Fenugreek May Benefit the Heart. Heart attacks lead to tissue death and oxidative stress in the heart muscle.
  3. Fenugreek May Help Prevent Obesity. In rats, fenugreek lowered weight gain.
  4. Fenugreek Reduces Blood Sugar. In a clinical trial of 24 type II diabetic patients, the patients either consumed powdered fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water or with yogurt for 8 weeks. The participants who consumed fenugreek in hot water had significantly reduced blood sugar than the participants who ate fenugreek with yogurt.
  5. Fenugreek Might Help Improve Skin Health. Fenugreek contains mucilage, a gooey substance that can soothe and moisturize dry skin without irritating it when applied to the surface of skin.
  6. Fenugreek Stops Cancer Cell Growth. The saponins in fenugreek prevent cell division in cancer cells and also induce programmed cell death (apoptosis).
  7. Fenugreek Has Antioxidant Properties. In rats whose livers were damaged by alcohol, fenugreek seed extract reduced the concentration of free radicals, increased antioxidants, and reduced damage to enzymes.
  8. Fenugreek Has Anti-inflammatory Properties. Mice with allergic skin reactions were given fenugreek for 7 days. Fenugreek reduced skin inflammation and the accumulation of inflammatory cells.
  9. Fenugreek Has Anti-Microbial Activity. Fenugreek seed extract was tested on dishes of bacterial species and inhibited the growth of E. coli and M. furfur. Sprouted fenugreek seeds may have increased antimicrobial activity, especially against H. pylori, than non-germinated seeds.
  10. Fenugreek Reduces Blood Clots. Anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin), are frequently prescribed to individuals at high risk for heart attacks and strokes because they help prevent the formation of blood clots that cut off blood supply to vital organs.
  11. Fenugreek May Help Protect the Digestive Tract. In rats under stress, fenugreek seed oil reduced the overall incidence of ulcers
  12. Fenugreek May Improve Kidney Health. In one study, male rats were given ethylene glycol, which led to the formation of kidney stones and resulted in low red blood cell count and anemia. Rats given fenugreek seeds had increased red blood cell count and hemoglobin and fewer calcium salts in the kidneys. This reduced the risk of developing kidney stones.
  13. Fenugreek Can Alleviate Dysmenorrhea (Menstrual Cramps). In a study (DB-RCT) of 101 female students, scientists tested the severity of their pain during two consecutive menstrual cycles while taking fenugreek or a placebo.
  14. Fenugreek May Help Improve Lactation During Breastfeeding. Fenugreek is considered by traditional herbal doctors to be a galactagogue, a substance that promotes the production of breast milk (lactation) in women. Some studies report that drinking fenugreek tea increased milk production and infant weight gain compared to placebos.
  15. Fenugreek Benefit For Men. Diosgenin, found in fenugreek, is an important precursor for sex hormone formation. It can balance sex hormones to help support libido in healthy males.
