The Science

ULTIMATE-FOCUS™ has a whopping 150mg of Phosphatidlserine, 60mg of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract.  We top off these essential brain enhancers with high doses of L-Carnitine Tartrate, DHA, Choline, and Inositol.

Below is information we’ve gathered on each one of these chemicals that make up ULTIMATE-FOCUS.

Phosphatidylserine

While Phosphatidylserine (PS) is found in all cells, it is most highly concentrated in the brain.

Phosphatidyll Serine (PS) helps form the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, helping to keep cells fluid and permeable for peak signalling performance. By Bensaccount [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

In particular, PS is concentrated in brain cell membranes. As a sort of coating for neurons, PS helps with the transfer of information from one brain cell to the next. This neurotransmission drives all aspects of cognitive function.

PS also helps to keep brain cell membranes fluid and permeable; this flexibility is associated with sharp cognitive performance and long-range brain health.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract

Improves Brain Function and Well-Being

There is some speculation that ginkgo may enhance brain function in healthy individuals.

A handful of small studies support the notion that supplementing with ginkgo may increase mental performance and perceived well-being.

Results from studies like these have given rise to claims linking ginkgo to improved memory, focus and attention span.

While supplementing with ginkgo may improve mental capability, there are no guarantees.

SUMMARY

Some research shows that ginkgo may improve mental performance in healthy people, but the data is inconsistent.

Choline Bitartrate

Brain health support is the primary reason to take choline bitartrate supplements, due to choline’s role in the biosynthesis of acetylcholine, therefore it is a prominent ingredient in our Brainiac™and also supports healthy inflammation management, heart health and liver health.

Signs You May Need Choline Bitartrate
Individuals most likely to benefit from choline bitartrate supplements include people who drink larger amounts of alcohol and endurance athletes. Pregnant women may also need choline to ensure proper fetal development.

The physical signs that most strongly indicate a choline deficiency include fatty liver disease and hemorrhagic kidney necrosis. Additional signs that you may need choline include various neurological conditions that affect strength and coordination. A high level of the enzyme ALT is often used to identify low choline levels.

DHA Powder

The omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is crucial for the healthy structure and function of the brain. An optimal intake of DHA is especially essential for pregnant and nursing mothers to ensure adequate brain development in their children.

May Improve ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — characterized by impulsive behaviors and difficulty concentrating — generally starts in childhood but often continues into adulthood.

As the main omega-3 fat in your brain, DHA helps increase blood flow during mental tasks. Research has shown that children and adults with ADHD commonly have lower blood levels of DHA.

In a recent review, seven of nine studies that tested the effects of DHA supplements in children with ADHD showed some improvement — such as with regard to attention or behavior.

May Help Prevent or Slow Alzheimer’s Disease

DHA is the main omega-3 fat in your brain and essential for a functional nervous system, which includes your brain.

Studies have shown that people with Alzheimer’s disease have lower levels of DHA in their brains than older adults with good brain function.

Additionally, in a review of 20 observational studies, higher intake of omega-3 fats was linked to a reduced risk of declining mental ability — a characteristic of different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease — in all but three studies.

May Help Protect Mental Health

Up to 20% of Americans live with mild depression while 2–7% have major depression.

Getting adequate amounts of DHA and EPA is associated with a reduced risk of depression.

In a study in about 22,000 adults in Norway, those who reported taking cod liver oil daily — which supplied 300–600 mg each of DHA and EPA — were 30% less likely to have symptoms of depression than those who didn’t.

While this study does not prove cause and effect, other research suggests ways in which DHA and EPA may reduce depression risk.

DHA and EPA aid serotonin, a nerve messenger which can help balance your mood. The anti-inflammatory effects of these omega-3 fats on nerve cells may reduce depression risk as well.

L-Carnitine

L-carnitine has been shown to support the heart and cardiovascular system, help athletes optimize their performance, help burn fat more easily, help rejuvenate our aging brains and even promote healthy sperm function.*
L-carnitine is critical for energy production in every cell of your body. It carries fat, in the form of fatty acids, to the mitochondrial inner membrane where energy is produced. Without L-carnitine, the normal burning of fat cannot take place.
In the brain and nervous tissues, acetyl L-carnitine is important in energy production, but is more importantly a precursor to acetylcholine. This powerful neurotransmitter plays a vital role in maintaining healthy brain function, memory and mood as we age.

Brain Health
Because of its unique chemical properties, acetyl L-carnitine (ALC) is able to cross into the brain easily, providing neuroprotective benefits. Besides aiding in fat metabolism, ALC directly stimulates the production of acetylcholine, a powerful neurotransmitter. Many current studies of L-carnitine and age-related changes in memory or mood have shown L-carnitine to benefit or delay those changes.
Sperm motility
Infertility research has shown approximately 30% of cases to be directly related to the man alone, and not the woman. One Italian study showed that 78% of men had improvement in sperm counts and motility with 3 grams of L-carnitine daily.

Inositol

Inositol is a carbohydrate found in your body, as well as in food and dietary supplements.

There are various forms of this molecule, and each of them has a chemical structure similar to the main sugar found in your blood — glucose.  Inositol plays a role in many bodily processes. Therefore, it has been studied for its potential health benefits.

Inositol supplements may help treat specific medical conditions, including some anxiety and fertility disorders. They may also have other health-promoting effects.

Here are some evidence-based health benefits of inositol.

May Reduce Anxiety by Affecting Serotonin

Inositol affects the processes that make neurotransmitters, the molecules responsible for relaying information within your brain.

Serotonin is one important neurotransmitter affected by inositol. This molecule has many roles in your body and impacts your behavior and mood.

Researchers have examined whether inositol supplements can improve symptoms associated with conditions affecting serotonin and the brain.

This includes anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Several studies have shown that inositol may be able to reduce the number of panic attacks in those with panic disorders.

May Reduce Symptoms of Depression

Due to its effects on neurotransmitters in the brain, inositol has been explored as a treatment for depression.

Some research has shown that 12 grams of inositol per day taken for four weeks can reduce symptoms of depression relative to a placebo.

Another small study reported that 6 grams per day improved depression in 9 of 11 participants.

However, other research has shown that adding inositol to standard medication for depression does not improve symptoms more than the medication alone.

What’s more, inositol has not proven effective in reducing depression in those who previously failed to respond to standard medication.
